Proposal for Immigration Reform

June 6th, 2007 by Quan Tranh

There are a large number of problems with the immigration reform bill going before the Senate this week. Senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson have decided to sell their constituents down the river in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens. Since our current elected officials have decided they are incapable of fixing the problem, I have created a proposal that should secure the borders and usher in a new era of immigration reform.

Dear Representatives, Senators, and Mr. President

I am writing to you to voice my opposition to the current immigration bill and any others that follow the same philosophy. I am an Asian-American son of a Vietnam War Vet. I understand the gift of the freedoms Americans enjoy and I understand the reason many want to come to our great nation. I am greatly concerned that amnesty will be given to illegal aliens.

I have friends who have married Europeans and they live in constant fear that INS is going to break up their family because paperwork is constantly being lost or simply because INS refuses to investigate illegal aliens.

Metro Atlanta Sheriffs and Police Chiefs have made many statements on AM 750 WSB that INS does not support their efforts to clean up the streets. Local law enforcement cannot enforce federal law which leaves gaps in some areas and duplication in others.

First, we need to secure the border. Some have stated that building a wall is not the proper approach to securing the border. I would like to cite the Great Wall of China. It is a marvel of Asian ingenuity and engineering. I believe it is time for America to build a Great Wall for the 21st Century to protect our border in much the same manner that the Great Wall of China has protected them from invaders. Securing the borders is essential.

Our immigration system is broken and we need to fix it in a way that puts Americans and those who want to become American first. My proposal to securing the borders and immigration reform involves the following:

  • Dissolve INS/ICE and issue severance packages to all employees. They, as an agency, have demonstrated they cannot enforce immigration and instead resort to harassing legal immigrants and their American spouses. Incompetence is not tolerated in the private sector and should not be tolerated in the public sector.
  • Dissolve the DEA. This represents an annual savings of $4 Billion. The War on Terror and the War on Drugs are not compatible since the terrorists receive funding from the black market for illegal drugs.
  • Allocate $2 Billion from the DEA breakup to the 50 states. The states shall choose whether to legalize drugs and spend the funds on treatment and education; or maintain their various controlled substances acts and spend the funds on enforcement and police expansion. Either way new jobs would be created in social services or state/local law enforcement.
  • Assign all the former DEA agents to border protection. Allocate $2 Billion to first build a fence and then fund the new agency.
  • Dissolve the IRS and implement the Fair Tax. This represents a savings of the requested $11.6 Billion 2008 operating budget request, cited by the US General Accountability Office.
  • Assign all former IRS agents to border protection, Social Security Fraud, and Identity Theft Enforcement
  • Eliminate all guest worker programs, including H1B visa programs for college educated technology workers. If there is a worker shortage it should be permanently corrected, not band-aided. This becomes more relevant as baby boomers retire and further create a worker shortage.
  • Expand the number of green card candidates. Both agriculture and IT/Science industries cannot meet the demand for labor. We should be inviting more people here to become American and be assimilated into our culture rather than sending them back home every year. This eliminates the need to track guest workers since all workers will be permanent.

I have outlined approximately $15 Billion in allocations that can be made to enhance border security. I believe these proposed changes will enhance our security and assist America with the expansion of our economy and our culture.

Abortion Fight Looming for Giuliani

May 10th, 2007 by Quan Tranh

Rudy Giuliani is turning out to be a candidate that can change a lot of things. Of note is that he is not going to tow the party line and go along with McCain and Romney on the abortion issue. Rudy’s advisors seem to think that abortion is not a divisive issue this election and stepping outside the norm may gather more swing voters or people who would normally vote Democrat.

I’m with his advisors on this one. Gen-X and Gen-Y are starting to become more interested in politics. The moral hang-ups that our parents had just are not on the radar for many people under age 35. Giuliani, if he continues on this course, is making a statement that your body is your property and that the government does not have the right to point a gun at you and tell you what you can and can’t do with your body. I will be interested to hear his views in the coming weeks on assisted suicide, since this “culture of life” the right wing is against anyone dying, except for death row inmates.

Republicans and religious zealots on the right are quick to challenge abortion and assisted suicide, but when there’s an execution scheduled they’re all over it. If the unborn are sacred and the elderly deserve protection, then mass murders should get the same treatment, right? Isn’t it Christian to forgive and not throw the first stone? How is it possible to be pro-life and pro-death at the same time? The best answer is to not ask too many questions and let people do what they will behind closed doors. America is about liberty and much of that comes from letting your neighbor do as they please, provided it does not infringe on your rights as an individual. You can be critical, but don’t try to legislate morality.

Bush Expected to Veto Hate Crime Bil

May 6th, 2007 by Quan Tranh

I’m all for putting people in prison for violent crime, but we already have laws on the books that deal with violent crime without getting into whether the victim is a racial minority or gay or something else. The President’s expected veto is a welcome act.

“State and local criminal laws already provide criminal penalties for the violence addressed by the new federal crime defined in section 7 of H.R. 1592, and many of these laws carry stricter penalties (including mandatory minimums and the death penalty) than the proposed language in H.R. 1592,” the statement said.

The above statement is a good point. The 50 states have their own laws and I am greatly dismayed that our Federal legislators are wasting time reinventing the wheel. In addition, only Federal authorities can enforce Federal law. I do not see the FBI going out to arrest people for violating laws such as this. It’s difficult enough getting your local police to help, especially when they’re out blowing things up like Boston PD.

Surprising minority advocates are supporting the idea of the veto.

Matt Barber, policy director for cultural issues with Concerned Women for America, was quick to praise the statement.

The bill would penalize someone who commits an act of violence against a homosexual more so than any other person. Assault is assault and murder is murder. We need to stop trying to invent new forms of hate crime and enforce the laws that are already on the books. I also believe that good self defense training can act as a deterrent. Most people are not going to commit assault if they know the potential of getting injured or shot themselves.

Wilderness Society Doesn’t Like Economics

February 25th, 2007 by Quan Tranh

Found on Digg. President Bush is authorizing the sale of up to 200,000 acres of National Forest land, mostly in California. Already the tree huggers are going nuts while cool capitalism is set to prevail.

“I am outraged, and I don’t think the public is going to stand for it for one minute,” said Wilderness Society policy analyst Mike Anderson. “It’s a scheme to raise money at the expense of the national forests, the wildlife, recreation and all the other values that Americans hold dear. It’s the ultimate threat to the national forest.”

Jerry Taylor of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, said the proposed land sales make sense.

“Private property will end up in the possession of those who value it the most,” Taylor said. “That is an iron law of economics.”

Being a Libertarian I’m going to have to take the side of the Cato Institute here. Being an environmentalist I’m also going to have to take the side of the Cato Institute. One problem I have with the environmental movement is it places too much emphasis on the Federal government in protecting our natural resources. In the case of ANWR the government can rightfully order drilling for oil. It’s their dirt and they can do with their dirt as they please or they can sell it to other people. Hell, they can turn it into a nuclear missile test range for all I care. It’s their dirt. In this case The Wilderness Society and Mike Anderson really need to get on board with modern economic realities.

Governments fail.

Governments run out of money.

Government priorities shift.

The key to preserving the planet is private or local ownership, not national ownership. This should not be National Forest. It should be California Forest. It should be Colorado Forest. I’m sure you get the idea my fellow tree huggers. Schwarzenegger is probably going to do more to protect the forest than Bush. The tax payers of “Colly-Fornia” are probably going to support initiatives to spend their tax money on buying some of that National Forest and making it California Forest. That is the great thing about this entire issue is that the Federal government is putting up National Forest for sale for State, County, and City government to own. And let’s not forget ownership by logging companies, home owners, or non-profit environmental conservation agencies. Yes, Wilderness Society, Defenders of Wildlife, and Greenpeace I’m talking to you. Your membership can buy this land that is for sale and donate it to you as a gift. You do accept land and property as estate gifts at time of death, right? So, why not accept land that you can manage directly? Why not invest in mutual funds and take the profits to buy the environment rather than lobby Congress? Politicians will serve their own needs. If you truly believe in protecting the environment then do something on a small level. When thousands of like minded individuals come together anything is possible.

Boston City of Wusses

February 1st, 2007 by Quan Tranh

This serves as further proof that the country made a good decision by not electing John Kerry or anyone from Massachusetts. Boston residents caused a panic by reporting an advertising campaign from Turner Broadcasting / Cartoon Network as a bomb threat. I am convinced that everyone in Massachusetts has had their brain freeze over at some point. Even the mayor of Boston displays how much of a hater he is.

“It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme,” Mayor Thomas Menino said. “I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred during the response to today’s incidents.”

According to the AP article the advertising campaign was running in Boston, NY, LA, Atlanta, Chicago, Portland, Austin, San Francisco, Seattle, and Philadelphia. So how is it that 9 cities don’t think anything of it?

Since statistically it seems unlikely that the combined population of 9 other cities did not report this as a threat does the mayor plan to pursue those who called in a *false* bomb scare? Has the mayor’s office investigated the possibility that this incident was reported with malicious intent?

“Everyone can play a part by holding Turner Broadcasting to account for today’s events,” Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley said. “Viewers, advertisers, license holders, can and should make clear to them this sort of behavior is reckless, irresponsible and illegal.”

Hey, Mr. Conley, why don’t you investigate the initial report. We have decided to be fair and give his office an opportunity to respond to our questions.

According to the same AP news article 9 other cities had the promotion for 2-3 weeks. Since, statistically, it seems unlikely that the combined population of 9 other cities did not report this as a threat does the DA’s office plan to pursue those who called in a *false* bomb scare? Has the DA’s office investigated the possibility that this incident was reported with malicious intent to tie up the resources of city authorities?

We would also like to know how advertising in and of itself is reckless, irresponsible, and illegal in Boston but it is not in the 9 other cities mentioned in the AP news article.

I will post the DA’s response when they get back to me.

Father Kills Daughter; Doubted Virginity; Doubted Doctors

January 25th, 2007 by Quan Tranh

A man shot his 17-year old daughter 4 times in the head fatally wounding her. She had been to the doctor several times for virginity testing and it appeared that she was a virgin. Even after the autopsy she was determined to be a virgin. Honor killings show that Islam is a barbaric religion and that it is so primitive it cannot trust modern medical science. King Abdullah has made progress by having honor killings classified as regular murders.

Bringing Back The Draft

November 20th, 2006 by Quan Tranh

It didn’t take long for Charles Rangel (D-NY) to start running his mouth again after the election.

Rangel, a veteran of the Korean War who has unsuccessfully sponsored legislation on conscription in the past, has said the all-volunteer military disproportionately puts the burden of war on minorities and lower-income families.

He should be saying that the present system disproportionately puts a burden on those who sign up for the army. I am not concerned with minorities or the lower-income families making up an unknown portion of new recruits. They know what the military does, regardless of the free college money. Rangel would have you believe that minorities and the poor have no idea they could be deployed into a war zone when they sign up for military service. Minorities are the new majority in many parts of the country. Asians and Latinos are expected to outnumber whites by 2025 in some parts of the country. If this new majority wants to go to war then let them. The draft is going to do nothing but sign up people who will end up getting themselves or others killed because they’re not there to perform a duty they volunteered for.

“If we’re going to challenge Iran and challenge North Korea and then, as some people have asked, to send more troops to Iraq, we can’t do that without a draft,” Rangel said.

Sure you can. Here is the solution, you recruit from Mexico. Mexicans get cash, money for college, and after 3 years of service they get a shot at citizenship. This solves the illegal immigrant problem by actively recruiting Hispanic soldiers. They get on the job training that can be used in a civilian job if they don’t want to go to college. From what I’ve read most Hispanics join the army for educational benefits and citizenship ranks fourth. Still it’s a way of getting people to join.

Now I do propose one change to the 2002 Bush executive order allowing non-citizens to join the military in exchange for citizenship. It needs to extend to ALL people. The executive order only allows legal immigrants to join. If you came here illegally then you can’t join the military. Allow anyone in any country to join our military in an exchange for permanent residency or citizenship regardless of where they are or their legal status when they sign up. Next I propose that Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations change to fit the newly revised executive order. When you arrest an illegal alien you offer them military service, education, and citizenship or a plane ticket back to where they came. Sure some will go back others will take the benefits package because it’s more than what they get back home. Even the life insurance from them getting killed in combat would be worth more than many years of working in Mexico or Eastern Europe. Providing for your family is what life is all about. Everyone’s ancestors 300+ years ago provided for them today since wealth is handed down from generation to generation and after 300+ years nobody is going to remember you as a person, but you will be in the family genealogy and history books for all the things you have done to make your family what it is today and will be in the future.

No Photos for Amish Immigrants

October 28th, 2006 by Quan Tranh

An Amish couple filed suit over the Homeland Security photo rule earlier this month. While you are free to worship as you wish, you are also free to choose whether or not to comply with the law of the land. The current rules for immigration, right or wrong, state you need to provide two photographs. This couple is free to convert to a religion that does not have an issue with photographs or they are free to go somewhere else that does not require it. Yes it is a painful and inconvenient experience, but rules are rules. If the rules are truly stupid then we should change them; however, I don’t see people lining up to complain about this particular rule.

Fight Terror Legalize Heroin

October 2nd, 2006 by Quan Tranh

An interesting post over at wordpress.com’s hosting service.  The blogger does make a good point that the terrorists are financed by drug money and the farmers will grow heroin because it is the most profitable.  Free market capitalism at work in it’s finest form.  I certainly don’t have a problem with capitalism, but there is something the west can do to reduce the profitability of the heroin trade.  Legalize the stuff!!!!  Take away the black market and viola!  Just think, they could be growing soy beans to make biodiesel fuel.  Damn, winning the war on terror and getting to hug a tree at the same time.  How often does that happen?
