Gay Couples Awarded Same Benefits As Married Couples

August 2nd, 2005 by Quan Tranh

California businesses must give spousal privileges to registered same-sex couples, the state Supreme Court ruled Monday by a vote of 5-0.

This is a wonderful development. I have always believed that the more rights awarded to same-sex domestic partnerships is a boost for those of us in hetrosexual domestic partnerships. Eventually the whole gay marriage debate will go away since there will be no difference between being married or just living together. When that comes to pass then straight couples will be able to argue that gays have benefits without getting married and straights should have the same benefits. I don’t want to hear anything about how straights have the option of getting married and gays do not therefore there should be no domestic partner benefits for straight couples. Marriages are doomed to a 1-in-2 failure rate so why bother? There’s a lot of risk to both men and women where a former spouse takes everything you have in a divorce. If there’s no marriage there will be no divorce and then maybe the right wing nut jobs will be quiet about the divorce rate.
